The Girl Gauntlet Documentary – Help Make the Movie

You want your daughter to be confident and happy in her own skin…  but statistics show 80% of our daughters leave adolescence unable to happily look at themselves in the mirror.  If that is the case, what are the chances that women will be bridging that pay gap or creating candidates worth voting for anytime soon?  When modern pressures cause a women’s self esteem to peak at age 9…What can be done?

Mandi Lynn a prior U.S. Military Nurse turned New Zealand  internationally award winning artist is on a quest to find the answers.  Daily she uses her camera to help women to heal body love challenges and celebrate their unique beauty.  But after 6 years of witnessing the damage to women first hand, she wants answers instead of being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff of self esteem.

The intended audience of this Michael Moore style feature length documentary is parents of daughters. All daughters reach a point in adolescence when the parent’s impact pales in comparison to the world.  A point where we need to stop shielding and start teaching her to become her own shield maiden.  But what if the mum never learned to really shield herself?  How can she begin to teach her daughter?  This is the true heart of the documentary.

Mandi’s quest for answers will be the spine of the story in which the individual stories of the girls and mothers flip flop from emotion to emotion to flesh out the screen play. The girl gauntlet investigates the impact on our daughters of online misogyny, photoshop, under representation of the variety of bodies, body shaming, the trillion dollar industry that wages war on women’s self esteem to turn a profit, self harming, bulimia, anorexia, bullying, cyber bullying, and the body positive movement.

9 Year olds, 13 year olds, and 18 year olds and world experts from 7 different countries are interviewed to gain insight into the problem.

The Girl Gauntlet will be partially self funded through crowd sourcing,  grants, and appropriate ethical corporate sponsorship.

The doco takes the parents on a virtual gauntlet exposing the sometimes chilling reality that their daughters are facing.  The end note however will be a hopeful one.  Empowering parents with tools that they can use to help enable their own daughters to face the challenges ahead.
